La Chamba is made from black clay found in central Colombia near the Magdalena River. Archeologists tell us this region is home to the oldest pottery known in the Americas. The clay is shaped by the hands of the artisans who pass the skill on from one generation to the next over the centuries. It is not glazed -- instead the clay is polished with river rocks before firing in wood kilns. Small imperfections in the finish and flecks of minerals in the clay are due to the handmade process and materials. These "imperfections" are a characteristic of the pottery and are harmless.
La Chamba dinnerware is perfect from stove to table. It can be used in the oven, microwave, and on the stovetop. Electric ranges need a heat diffuser to prevent oxidation of the finish; on a gas stove, a medium flame gives the best results.
Before the first use, wash pieces well with very hot water to clear off loose clay and dust. The dinnerware is not dishwasher safe. We recommend a quick soak in the sink and wiping clean with a sponge. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scrubbers.
There are no toxins used in the production of this dinnerware. The makers of this unique product use no glazes and there is no lead in the clay. You can feel safe and confident using this unique and authentic traditional clay dinnerware.
